These Soy Ginger Chicken Wraps couldn't be easier. The ingredients include ground chicken or turkey, shredded carrots, garlic, onion, red bell pepper, and chopped peanuts. The ingredients are mixed with an Asian-inspired sauce that combines soy & oyster sauce with garlic and ginger. The prep may feel like a lot, but it comes together in under 15 minutes once you gather your ingredients. If you aren't into chicken wraps, this makes a wonderful topping to a salad, either warm or cold. You can also make lettuce wraps. Actually, the recipe was inspired by a lettuce wrap recipe.

The Secret Ingredient - Oyster Sauce
If you haven't used Oyster Sauce, don't be afraid. It is wonderfully delicious and adds a depth of flavor to the chicken in my chicken wraps.
Oyster sauce is a rich, dark brown condiment with a savory and slightly sweet flavor. Despite its name, it doesn't taste strongly of oysters. Instead, it offers a unique umami depth that enhances a wide variety of dishes.
Traditionally, oyster sauce is made by simmering oysters in water until the liquid reduces and thickens into a syrupy sauce. However, many commercial versions today use oyster extracts combined with sugar, salt, soy sauce, and cornstarch for thickening. This results in a glossy, thick sauce that adds both flavor and a beautiful sheen to food. Think of it as a secret ingredient that brings a subtle but significant savory boost.
You can certainly leave it out if you don't want to have random extra ingredients in the house, but once you use it, you'll find you want to add it to your Asian-inspired recipes. Oyster Sauce will keep in the cabinet for 3-6 months, but is best kept in the refrigerator and there it can last longer.
If you want to buy Oyster Sauce and use it in other dishes, here are some suggestions:
Lastly, if you want to substitute for Oyster Sauce here are some ideas.
For a vegetarian or vegan option, a popular choice is a mixture of soy sauce and mushroom-based sauces like shiitake or mushroom broth. This combination provides both the salty base and the earthy, umami notes you'd find in oyster sauce.
Another excellent alternative is hoisin sauce, which boasts a similar sweet and savory profile, though it tends to be a bit sweeter and thicker. You might want to adjust the sweetness in your recipe accordingly.
Finally, for a simpler swap, tamari (a gluten-free soy sauce) can work in a pinch, especially if you're also adding other flavorful ingredients to your dish. While it lacks the subtle sweetness and complexity of oyster sauce, it still provides that essential savory depth. You could add a bit of brown sugar to add that sweetness it is missing.
Spicing Things Up with Sriracha
As you can see in the notes, I like to spice my Soy Ginger Chicken Wraps up with a bit of Sriracha. Yum. Also, if you want a bit more sharpness, you can add some rice wine vinegar. Just a touch will do.
