There's something truly magical about New England summers, isn't there? After the cold winters and chilly spring, the air literally hums with possibility. And it also means that it is berry season in New England.
This year, I’ve been inspired to explore berry picking, which I originally fell in love with in Maine when I was a kid, because I found wild black raspberry bushes in my backyard. I love these treasures, and found there are a lot of places you can pick your own berries throughout the summer at local berry farms!
Experiencing Berry Picking

My first experience in berry picking was in patches of wild blueberries at a friend’s house in Maine, where we stayed most summer weekends. After picking the berries, Mrs. Lambert would teach me how to make the most delicious blueberry muffins and pancakes in her retro 1950s kitchen. These were special memories.
All this came back to me as I carefully picked the black raspberries in my backyard, and an experience I’d kind of forgotten. I find a huge satisfaction in hand-picking my own ingredients. It sparks my curiosity and creativity. Maybe you feel the same inspiration?
Berry picking in New England is more than just an activity; it's an experience. It's a chance to slow down, connect with nature, and gather the freshest ingredients imaginable. Plus, those baskets brimming with colorful berries can inspire amazing, creative dishes!
In early July, New England is a berry paradise! You'll find strawberries still lingering, their sweet scent a reminder of early summer. And brace yourselves because blueberries, raspberries, and even some early blackberries are coming into their prime!
To help you embark on your berry-picking adventure and ignite that culinary spark, I’m highlighting some fantastic New England farms that truly shine. Now, this isn’t every farm, but a few scattered ones, so check for others in your area.
Massachusetts Pick-Your-Own Berry Farms
Ward's Berry Farm (Sharon, MA): A true New England institution! Ward's Berry Farm offers a fantastic pick-your-own experience with a wide array of fruits and vegetables throughout the seasons. From plump strawberries in June to juicy blueberries in July (and even peaches later on!), you're sure to find something to fill your basket.
Beyond the fields, their farm stand is a treasure trove of fresh produce, baked goods, and even a play area for the little ones. It's a wonderful place to spend a sunny morning or afternoon, fostering a love for fresh, local food. They make prepared sandwiches, smoothies, and specialty prepared foods. You can head over for lunch and an afternoon of exploring, or stop on the way home from work for fresh produce and something for dinner.
I particularly love how they label where things are coming from, so you know what’s theirs and what they have brought in.
Tougas Family Farm (Northborough, MA): If you're looking for a farm that truly embraces the family experience, Tougas is your spot! Renowned for their incredible PYO options, they boast one of the largest cherry orchards in New England, and their berry fields are equally impressive.
They often have combo boxes available, so you can pick both strawberries and cherries, or blueberries and blackberries when in season. Tougas emphasizes the "real deal" farm experience, focusing on the fruit itself while offering delightful additions like their Farm Store & Kitchen and friendly barnyard animals. Don't forget to check their "What's Picking Today" section before you go!
Simons Berry Farm (formerly Tree-Berry Farm) (Scituate, MA): For a more focused blueberry-picking adventure, Simons Berries is a gem on the South Shore. Known for their bountiful blueberry bushes, this farm offers a more intimate picking experience. It's cash-only, so come prepared, and be sure to check their updates for ripening and weather conditions.
There's a quiet satisfaction in methodically filling your bucket with these tiny blue powerhouses, knowing the delicious treats you'll create with them later.

Coonamessett Farm (East Falmouth, MA): Down on Cape Cod, Coonamessett Farm offers a unique membership-based pick-your-own experience, emphasizing hand-grown, locally sourced food. While they are a working farm with a focus on sustainable practices and even scientific research, they also welcome visitors to pick their own produce.
It's a wonderful opportunity to connect with the agricultural roots of the region and gather fresh berries for your culinary creations. Their Buffalo Jump cafe also offers delicious breakfast and lunch options, making it a full sensory experience.
Tips for a Perfect Picking Experience for Berry Season in New England

Dress for Success: Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes you don't mind getting a little dirty. A hat and sunscreen are also your best friends on sunny days!
Check Before You Go: Always call ahead or check the farm's website/social media for the latest picking conditions, hours, and what's currently ripe.
Follow Farm Rules: Each farm has its own guidelines to ensure a good experience for everyone and to protect their crops. Listen to the staff and respect their property.
Pick with Purpose: Select berries that are fully ripe and firm. Remember, berries generally don't ripen much after being picked, so choose wisely!
Bring Your Own Containers (or not!): Some farms require you to purchase their containers, while others allow you to bring your own. It's always good to clarify beforehand.
Think Beyond the Bowl: Once you've got your haul, let your curiosity lead the way! Will you make a vibrant berry tart, a refreshing smoothie, a homemade jam, or perhaps a savory berry salsa? The possibilities are endless, and each creation will build your culinary confidence.
This summer, I encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and into the berry patch. Embrace the simple joy of harvesting your own food, and let that accomplishment fuel your creativity in the kitchen.
Ok, I'm heading into my backyard to pick more wild black raspberries. 👩🌾 Happy picking, and happy cooking!
