Cooking Basics: How to Hard Boil an Egg

The perfect hard-boiled egg has two essential components. First, both the egg white and the egg yolk need to be cooked. Second, you need to be able to easily peel the eggs. No one wants eggs that look like the egg on the left, right?

Of course, if you were going to make egg salad, it wouldn't matter, but still.

I've taken a bit of a different approach because I don't boil my eggs. Instead, I steam them. Steaming makes sure you get a good result every time.

How to Cook the Perfect Hard-Boiled Egg

Step One

Gather your eggs. I know a lot of recipes will say fresh is better, but I've used fresh and not so fresh, and they have both worked fine.

Step Two

Fill a saucepan with some water and then add the steamer basket. Bring the water to a boil.

Add the eggs to the steamer basket, cover, and reduce to a simmer.

Cook eggs for 10 minutes.

Step Three:

While the eggs are cooking, create an ice bath, simply water and ice mixed together.

Step Four:

Place the cooked eggs into the ice bath to chill down quickly.

Once chilled you can either peel them or put them into the refrigerator.

Then you can make your favorite dish or eat them as is!
